Frequently Asked Questions
In our experience, here are the questions that are most often on our customers' minds:
Q: I want to go ahead with my fence project as proposed. What do I do?
A: Sign the proposal, circle and initial any options you'd like (if any options are listed separately), and return copy along with a 30% deposit check made out to Blue Bird Fence.
Q: I mailed back my proposal + deposit check as described above. What happens next?
A: During the busy periods, it takes 10-14 days from when you mailed back the proposal for us to receive it and for your project to work its way through our customer service, product ordering, and crew scheduling departments. After 2-3 weeks, your project will be assigned a "week of" installation date. A day or two before the installation, we will call / e-mail to let you know the exact day the crew will be arriving.
During the quieter periods (i.e. Winter) projects may progress much faster - We will let you know if this is the case.
Q: Costumer "responsibilities" what are those?
A: It depends on your project, so your Estimator will make your specific responsibilities clear to you. Typical customer responsibilities include marking the property lines and/or having the property surveyed, calling DigSafe, pulling permits, and marking irrigation lines.
Importantly, many projects require the homeowner to clear the new fence lines of brush/bushes/trees before the fence can be installed.
Q: I don't live near any buried lines. Do I really need to call DigSafe?
A: Yes! Every homeowner who hires a contractor to dig on their property is required by law to call DigSafe first - no matter how unlikely it might be that there are buried lines near the property. It's usually a very quick call,
and it costs nothing. DigSafe usually comes out to the property within 3 business days (you don't need to be present when they arrive). The permit is valid for 30 days, so in the Spring/Summer busy periods you should wait to call DigSafe until about 3-4 weeks ahead of when your job is scheduled for installation. Other times of the year (early Spring, late Summer, Fall, Winter) you should call as soon as you decide to move forward with your project.
Q: Do I need to pull a permit for my fence?
A: Depends. In many towns you do, in others, you don't, as long as certain benchmarks (like fence height, distance from the road, etc.) aren't surpassed. The recent trend for most towns is to become stricter regarding fence permitting, so you should always check with your town's building inspector before committing to a fence installation. As a Licensed contractor company, BlueBird Fence may be able to assist with permit application under CLS.
Q: My fence is going around my pool. Are there any special requirements?
A: Yes, absolutely. Every town has its own set of pool fence requirements, and each year a handful of towns change/ update their requirements. It's essential that your town's building inspector give you the ok on your pool fence proposal.
Q: Is it the homeowner's responsibility to ensure the fence is installed within the property boundaries?
A: Yes, the homeowner is responsible for knowing the property lines. Our crew will put the fence where the homeowner indicates, so it's important that the property lines are clearly marked. The only way to know the property boundaries for sure is to have the property surveyed by a professional surveyor, and to have the lines clearly staked. The crew can then set up string lines between the stakes to ensure the fence is installed on the correct side of the property line. Any other means of property line identification (i.e. telephone poles, rock walls, plot plans) aren't 100% dependable. So, if there are any property boundary questions whatsoever, we strongly encourage homeowners to have the property surveyed prior to the fence installation.
Q: Do I need to be present during the fence installation?
A: It is highly recommended that you be present when the crew foreman arrives the first day of your project, so you can walk the fence lines with him and point out any "hot button" issues that might be on your mind. The foreman will have been briefed about your project before arriving, so he may have some questions and/or issues he wants to talk over with you as well. After the initial 10-20 minute chat, it's not usually necessary for you to remain home. However, all our foremen are extremely approachable, respectful and willing to please, so you are encouraged to consistently communicate throughout the fence project.
Q: Are my buried irrigation lines potentially a problem with my fence install?
A: Unfortunately, yes. Irrigation systems and fence installations just weren't meant to go together. Blue Bird crews will do their best to miss any sprinkler heads and irrigation lines that are flagged. Though they are always extremely careful, if a crew hits an unmarked sprinkler head or line, they'll leave it exposed and tell you about it. It is usually a very quick and inexpensive fix for your irrigation company to perform, but those costs and arrangements are
the homeowner's responsibility.
Q: What happens to the dirt/debris that is dug up out of the ground during my fence installation?
A: Our crews do not take away earth/dirt/rocks that are dug up from holes on your property. They will put some back into the holes around the posts, if appropriate, but any excess will be left in a tidy pile for your use/disposal after the installation. Importantly, if the crew is removing an old fence for you, and there are concrete bases around the old posts, the removal of those bases is not included in your installation estimate. The crew will either leave those bases for you to dispose, or they can haul away and dispose those for you at an additional cost.
Q: When is payment due on the balance of my fence project?
A: The balance is due by check to the Foreman before he leaves your property upon completion of your fence project. (Unless you paid 100% upfront .) It's always a good idea to walk the final fence lines with the installer so you can inspect and approve the final craftsmanship and address any issues at that point. Assuming you are pleased with the final product, payment at that point directly to the Foreman is greatly appreciated.
Q: What's my Warranty?
A: All our fences are warrantied for one full year from the date of installation. This warranty covers all materials
and workmanship for any defects through normal events and conditions. It does not cover abnormal events such as being struck by foreign objects, vandalism and /or abuse. It also should be noted that any wood fence exposed to the elements will undergo certain changes. These changes, such as graying, checking and shrinking, are natural and should be expected. Periodic light cleaning of the fence (by the homeowner) should be expected to keep the fence looking its best.
